The leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) is an endangered 'keystone species,' which means that it has a large impact on its environment and surrounding organisms. The leatherback is the largest and oldest sea turtle in existence and preys primarily on jellyfish, which keeps jellyfish populations in check. Because jellyfish eat larval fish, keeping their population down is key to allowing other fish populations to thrive. It's all a matter of balance, but right now that balance is in danger - the leatherback population has declined due to an excess of fishing gear and plastics in the ocean, which can entangle or choke them. You can help by actively opposing harmful fishing practices and the creation/use of single-use plastics. You can also volunteer to help with local river/beach clean-ups, or donate to an organization actively helping to restore ocean ecosystems.
